Thomas Roman Chmielewski, a beacon of pure joy and a friend to everyone he met, passed away peacefully on January 7, 2026. He was 66 years old.
Born on June 9, 1959, in Hamtramck and raised in Detroit, Tommy was the beloved son of the late Henry and Irene (Smiecinski) Chmielewski. Following the passing of his mother, Tommy moved to live with his sister, Vicky, and brother-in-law, Jim. They took exceptional care of him, and Tommy thrived in the comfort of their home. He loved his daily routine, which always began with his coffee—but “just two.”
Tommy graduated from the Special Education Program through Detroit Public Schools at age 26, and grew in his spiritual life through the Special Education Catechism program at St. Mark Parish in Warren, where he proudly made his First Holy Communion and Confirmation. Through St. Mark's Tommy also made many friends and enjoyed social activities including a Disney Cruise - twice! For the last 27 years, Tommy was a dedicated participant at Social Resource Incorporated (SRI), where he built work skills, friendships, and shared countless laughs over activities like picnics, outings and bowling. One of the greatest highlights of every year was attending summer camp at The Fowler Center in Mayville, Michigan—an experience he looked forward to with excitement all year long.
To know Tommy was to know a "bright light." He was a loyal Detroit Lions fan and lived for the next big family occasion, especially if it involved a wedding or a birthday where cake would be served. He liked to dance, particularly when his favorite "Oldies" were playing, especially Elvis. At home, he was happiest watching Rocky movies or his favorite TV shows: Bonanza, MASH, and Match Game.
Above all, Tommy was a "people person." He possessed a genuine interest in the lives of his family. He was a constant cheerleader for his nieces and nephews, always eager to hear what they were up to and greeted all of them with a warm heart and a friendly wave.
Tommy is preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Irene. He is survived by his devoted siblings: Norbert (Cecilia) Chmielewski, Victoria (James) Olson, and Henry Chmielewski. He is the cherished uncle to Patricia (Daniel) Skapyak, Sandra (Colin) Henshaw, Steven (Michelle) Olson, Jeffrey (Angela) Chmielewski, Aaron Chmielewski, and Leah Chmielewski; and a proud great-uncle to Cheyne, Kayla, Quinn, Drew, Chase, and Claire. He will also be deeply missed by many beloved cousins and friends.
Tommy’s life was a testament to the fact that a warm soul and a kind heart are the greatest gifts one can give the world. He held a special place in all of our hearts, and while we will miss his smile, we are comforted knowing he is finally reunited with his mother and father, perhaps enjoying a slice of cake and dancing to Elvis.
