Thomas Edward Barney

Thomas was born on November 28, 1918, to Peter and Mary (Jette) Barney in Gay, Michigan.  He later met the love of his life, Helen Marie Grant, and they were married on January 21, 1939, in Detroit. As a young man, Thomas proudly served in the United States Navy in Pearl Harbor during World War II with dedication and honor. The couple was later blessed with four children. They made countless beautiful memories and had 69 cherished years together.

Thomas loved his family, especially his grandkids. He was kind, gentle and was always smiling. Thomas was always there for his kids. He enjoyed life and took pride in being a role model for his family. He was a true cornerstone. Thomas and Helen retired to Florida and enjoyed many winters with their friends. Thomas also enjoyed sharing time with his caretaker, Paul Young. His grandkids will always remember their “Papa”.

Beloved father of Richard (Deborah) and Timothy (Tracey Capizzi); he is also survived by twelve grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, and numerous relatives and friends.

Thomas was preceded in death by his wife, Helen, his parents; Peter and Mary; his siblings; Peter, Raymond, Teresa, Marie and Clarice, and his children; Thomas and Michael.

Visitation to take place on Thursday, September 9, 2021, from 2:00 PM – 8:00 PM. Memorial service will be on Friday, September 10 at St. Peter Catholic Church. Instate, or gathering time, 9:00 AM. Service at 9:30 AM.
