Shirley Marie Hunter
The world lost one of its kindest souls with the passing of Shirley Hunter on April 6, 2024. Shirley passed comfortably, surrounded by her loving family.
Shirley was born in Frostburg, Maryland in 1934 to Robert and Marjorie Duncan. After graduating high school, Shirley moved to Detroit and like many young adults began working at Chrysler. There she met her husband Mitchell (aka Mitch, Red or Coy) Hunter. They married soon thereafter and started a family, wherein Shirley became a full-time Mom (and if you know her sons, you know just how tough that job was!)
Shirley and Mitch raised a beautiful family together. They were involved in a number of Masonic organizations and the Jefferson Chapter 489 of the Eastern Star. Through those organizations they made a legion of close friends, living and deceased, too numerous to mention.
Shirley loved spending time with family in Frostburg, Maryland and Mitch’s hometown in Livingston, Tennessee.
As the family grew, Shirley welcomed each new member, daughters-in-law, a son-in-law, grandkids, pets, and eventually great grandkids with the widest possible arms, a heart impossibly full of love and the absolute best baked goods any of them had ever eaten (Including the pets). She would teach her new daughters-in-law how to bake, cook and love to the point that the “in law” was removed, and they all became her daughters.
She turned a shy little terrier into a lapdog after one dog sitting visit. She was adored by anyone and everyone who came into contact with her. Her smile and laugh lit up rooms and she loved a good joke, (especially dirty jokes, but she would have been a bit embarrassed to admit it.)
Shirley had a giving spirit and heart to anyone in need and never went anywhere empty-handed. Even in her later years when her health was failing, it would have taken a small army to prevent her from bringing cookies, cheesecakes and other desserts to a family gathering. Shirley lived to make the people she loved happy and every single one of them is better because of their time with her.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Mitchell Hunter, her daughter Carolyn Hunter, her granddaughter Nicole Hunter, her brother Robert Duncan, sister Dolores Wummel and her dear neighbor and friend Veronica “Hunter”Myers.
She was survived by her children, Ricky Hunter, Ken and Michelle DeBeaussaert, Perry Hunter, Ranee Naschak, Jerry and Sandra Hunter and Robert and Debby Hunter as well as 11 grandkids and nine great grandkids.
Shirley’s life will be celebrated by her family at a private event. Donations can be made to Turning Point, where Shirley volunteered her time later in life at their Second Hand Rose Resale Shop. Arrangements were handled with care and compassion by the Lee-Ellena Funeral Home.
