Peggy Jones Obituary

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Peggy Lewis Jones. Peggy was born in Louisville, KY, and made her home in Detroit, MI, with her family. Peggy was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, and dear friend, who departed this life at the age of 83. Peggy peacefully departed this life surrounded by family, leaving behind a legacy of compassion, strength, and unwavering love.

Peggy dedicated many purposeful years to nurturing and advocating for young people as a Paraprofessional and Truant Officer at Butzel Middle School. Her heart for service, especially toward children, was evident in everything she did—she gave her time, her wisdom, and most importantly, her care. In addition to raising her own children, Peggy also opened her heart and home as a foster mother to many, offering love, stability, and hope to those in need. Her nurturing spirit touched countless lives and left an indelible mark on every child she welcomed into her life.

Peggy was a devoted mother to Andrea Jones, Andre Jones, Tammy T. (Jones) Patton (Clifford Patton Jr.), and Traci Jones, and a loving mother-in-love to Sharon Ragland. Her legacy extends through her 15 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, all of whom brought immense joy to her life.

Peggy’s faith was the cornerstone of her life. A woman of deep and enduring faith, Peggy graduated from St. Catherine High School, which would later become part of the community she remained devoted to for decades—St. Augustine St. Monica Catholic Parish. Her relationship with God was the foundation of her life, and she was a steady source of spiritual strength and encouragement to all who knew her.

Something that was extremely important to her—that brought her comfort and inspiration—was her gospel music. She loved to listen to an array of artists whose voices lifted her spirit and filled her home with praise. Her other great love was her Motown album collection, which she listened to every day on her Alexa. The melodies of those timeless classics were a source of joy, nostalgia, and connection to the city she called home.

Family was everything to Peggy. She cherished the time spent together—whether through big celebrations or simple everyday moments.

Peggy was also deeply engaged with the world around her. She followed politics with passion and insight, never afraid to voice her thoughts or spark a spirited conversation. Creative and resourceful, she found joy in crafts and cooking—blessing others with the warmth of her meals and handmade creations. And with a playful spirit, she never missed a chance to try her luck with a scratch-off or a lottery ticket.

One of Peggy's favorite places was Belle Isle, where she found peace in the beauty of nature and calmness in the still of the water. Feeding the geese and ducks along the Detroit River brought her a quiet kind of joy that reflected the gentle rhythm of her soul.

Peggy will be missed more than words can express. Her presence was a gift—her love, her smile, her guidance, and her strength live on in the hearts of her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family, foster children, and the many lives she touched. Her legacy is one of kindness, resilience, faith, and unconditional love—a light that will never be extinguished.

Peggy always said and lived by her words, "Life is a gift. Take it not for granted"
