Joel Ernest Matthews

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Joel Ernest Matthews, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, who left us peacefully on August 17, 2025, at the age of 83. Born on March 13, 1942, in Dearborn, Michigan, Joel was the cherished son of Ernest and Marjorie Matthews.

Joel lived a life full of laughter, love, and adventure. He shared a wonderful life with his loving wife, Carol, for 45 years. In his younger years, he was a dedicated Research Biologist at Wayne State University and later found fulfillment in overseeing the operations of Partridge Creek Golf Course.

Passionate about good food, Joel had a deep love for all things delicious, especially Chinese food and seafood. He found joy in driving his sports cars and loved traveling and exploring new places with his family by his side. Those who knew him will forever remember his humor; Joel had a gift for bringing smiles and laughter wherever he went.

Joel had many passions, from tending to his yard to working out, swimming, jogging, spending time at the golf course.  He even accomplished a black belt in karate. He adored his dogs and appreciated life’s simple pleasures, like enjoying a cold Pepsi after a long day. Most of all, he treasured time with his family and carried on family traditions.

In remembrance of Joel, let us carry forward his love for life and the joy he shared with those around him. We will miss him dearly, but his spirit will forever remain in our hearts.

He is survived by his son, Shawn Traver (Elizabeth); grandchildren, Shane (Monica, Aaliyah) and Sarah; and many loving cousins. He is reunited in Heaven with his dear parents, Ernest and Marjorie, and his loving wife, Carol.

Though Joel will be deeply missed, his adventurous spirit, humor, and love for life will forever remain with those fortunate enough to have known him.
