James was born in Detroit on October 27, 1938 to Edward and Helen Grove.
Beloved husband and best friend to Barbara; dear father of Maureen Langewicz; proud grandfather of Michael (Kourtney); loving great grandfather of Logan James; cherished brother of Sally Grady (Terrance).
James was preceded in death by his dear son Michael, siblings Edward (Patricia), and Susan; and parents Edward and Helen Grove.
James graduated from St. Martin school in Detroit in 1956 and joined the United States Marine Corp. He then joined the Army National Guard in 1967 and retired as Lt. Col. After getting bored with retirement, he bought The Ann Arbor Cyclery in Ann Arbor, Michigan which he owned for 11 years. He so enjoyed being around those college kids.
Jim stayed connected to his school pals over the years and he and Barbara truly enjoyed all the luncheons, picnics, get togethers. Always a great time. Every June a Mass was celebrated at St. Mary’s downtown Detroit for the St. Martin Class of ’56, then Lunch in Greek Town
James loved the Guard porker games. He loved the camaraderie, loved when he won. These men were connected not only by the National Guard, they truly were good friends.
Jim had a tender heart and for many years did Meals on Wheels. In later years he joined the team at Beaumont, “No One Dies Alone” He sat with patients when family could not be there.
He was a gifted storyteller and always had a story (or a million) to tell anyone who would like to listen. Just ask Barb.
James (Jimmy) will be remembered as a beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, great-
Grandfather and friend to all.
We will miss you so very much. Until we meet again.
Due to current circumstances, we are unable to have an appropriate funeral, but in the near future we plan to have a true celebration of Jim’s life, and hope you will join us at that time.
