Helen Grace Herd

Dr. Helen Grace Herd Ed.D was born August 15th, 1936 in Waynesboro, Mississippi to the union of Pastor Thomas J. Fikes & First Lady Willie B. Fikes (Jordan). She was the youngest of three children. One brother, Emmanuel Fikes (Berthetta) and one sister, Mary Joyce Williams. 

Helen Herd was an innovative trailblazer who broke many barriers.  At a young age she took control of her life and began working various jobs to provide for herself and her family. She devoted her life to education and taught at a number of colleges and universities. 

Helen made her transition on January 21, 2021 surrounded by her loved ones. Helen Herd is survived by her 6 children, 9 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild. She is remembered by her extensive knowledge, love of people and sense of humor.
