Gladys Eleanor Stolzenfeld, age 85 of Chesterfield, passed away peacefully on January 2, 2020.
Gladys was born on March 17, 1935 to Herbert and Gladys Jensen in Chicago, Illinois. As a young woman, Gladys would earn her Nursing diploma from Wesley Memorial in downtown Chicago and began her nursing career there working as an RN. She would meet her future husband, Merton Charles Stolzenfeld, while attending a USO dance in Chicago. They fell in love and married. Gladys and Merton established their home together in Merton’s hometown of Detroit, MI, where they would start their family. While raising her family, she also attended college at Wayne State University and the University of Detroit, where she earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing. Gladys was an incredibly caring and compassionate nurse who worked at Bon Secours Hospital for over 40 years in a variety of nursing roles. She was always known for her whistling and singing and was well loved by her fellow staff and patients alike. Gladys loved her children and was the best Nana ever to her grandchildren. She loved visiting her cottage with her family near Cheboygan, where they had countless beautiful memories and moments together. Gladys especially loved her trips to the cottage with her “cottage girls”. She had a passion for gardening and was known for her beautiful gardens while she and Merton lived in St. Clair Shores. She also enjoyed many games and puzzles of all sorts. She easily made friends wherever she went and readily volunteered for activities to help others and meet new friends.
Gladys will be forever remembered in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
Beloved mother of Tom (Barbara) Stolzenfeld, Lynne (Dean) Endlich, Kathryn (Christopher) Powell, and Merton D. (Tracy) Stolzenfeld; cherished Nana of Lindsey, Rachel, Andrew, Aaron, Ryan, Nathan, and Danielle.
Gladys was preceded in passing by her husband Merton, of over 50 years, beloved brother Herbert George, and parents Herbert and Gladys.
