Gerald "Jerry" Schmitt

Gerald John Schmitt (Jerry/Schmitty), age 82, passed away peacefully on December 15, 2021, after courageously battling Muscular Dystrophy and Alzheimer’s for several years.  He was surrounded in love by his family.  

Jerry was born on February 9, 1939 to Adolph and Rose Schmitt in Detroit, Michigan. He met his one and only Elaine, in 1957.  Jerry joined the United States Army in 1962 and later that year he and Elaine were married on October 20.  He started working at the GM Tech Center at age 18  until his retirement, 44 years later, in 2001.  Jerry was an avid (almost scratch) golfer and had two holes-in-one in his golf career.  He loved all the many golf vacations shared with family and friends. Jerry enjoyed his many fishing outings with his father and with his son.  He always enjoyed a cold Bud Light while watching golf, baseball, football and socializing with friends.  Jerry was better known as “Bumpa” to all his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and loved attending their many events and spending time with them.  His family was everything to him.  Jerry loved to garden and to create and care for his many beautiful bonsai trees.  His dog, Zoey, was his faithful companion and best buddy.  Schmitty will be known for his easy smile and greatly missed by all who knew him. 

Beloved husband of Elaine; proud father of Noelle Ciesluk, Tracy Schmitt (Mike Biesbrouck), and Todd (Kirsten) Schmitt; devoted grandfather of Jordan (David), Justin, Jarrett, Jenna, Sam, Alex, Jared (Sara), Chelsea, and beloved great-grandfather of David, Alaina, Alivia, Donovan, Harper, and Hudson; loved brother of Carolyn (Bob) Clancy and Russell (Kay).

In lieu of flowers donations to Alzheimer’s Association or Muscular Dystrophy Association would be appreciated.  

Funeral Mass to take place on Saturday, January 8 at St. Isidore Catholic Church. Service at 10:00 AM. Visitation to take place later in the day at Lee-Ellena Funeral Home from 2:00 PM - 8:00 PM, with military honors at 6:00 PM. 
 

Family is requesting everyone who is attending the services to wear face masks.
