It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Eugene Dale Ellena, age 98, who departed this life on June 19, 2026. Born on March 23, 1928, in Marseilles, Illinois, Eugene was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather whose enduring spirit touched the lives of many.
Eugene dedicated his life to service, both as a committed educator and as a proud veteran who served honorably in three wars: World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. His military career spanned 26 years, during which he exemplified courage and commitment, earning respect and admiration from his peers and countless others. Notably, he was the second man ever to land a plane in Antarctica as part of "Operation Deep Freeze," a testament to his adventurous spirit and dedication.
On April 8, 1951, Eugene married his beloved wife, Marjorie, with whom he shared many cherished memories and moments of joy. Together, they created a nurturing family environment filled with love and laughter, where Eugene was known as a devoted father and an adoring grandfather. His enthusiasm for life was evident in everything he did, from his genuine love for his children and grandchildren to his active participation in the community.
A faithful member of St. Luke Lutheran Church, Eugene actively served as an usher and contributed to the church community with his unwavering faith. He was also a proud member of the Lutheran Retired Teachers' Association, where he continued to share his passion for education.
Eugene's interests extended beyond the classroom and church; he was an avid reader, particularly of military and Western novels, and he had a lifelong fascination with aviation. His enthusiasm for airplanes was evident at air shows and throughout his travels, many of which were undertaken to be near his family. He cherished the moments spent in Hawaii and on Whidbey Island, where he created lasting memories.
Eugene was also known for his playful spirit and love of pranks, bringing laughter to those around him. His remarkable life story, filled with adventure and service, will be remembered fondly by all who knew him.
Cherished father to Stephen (late Jim), Lawrence (Sandy), Phyllis, J Craig (late Debbie), and Cynthia (late Pete); beloved grandfather to Kristyn, Eric, Ben, Dale, Charlie, Anthony, and Shane; treasured great-grandfather to 8 great-grandchildren.
Joined in Heaven by his dear wife, Marjorie, daughter Pamela (Dan), and his siblings, Livona (late Robert) Brewe, and Richard (late Pat) Ellena
