Maia Platt of Macomb Township passed on June 3 2022, surrounded by family after a more than three-year battle with cancer.
Maia was born to Andrew and Tatiana Poliakova on April 11, 1972 in Ulyanovsk, Russia. She later moved with her family to Rostov-on-Don and grew up there studying both Music and Economics as an undergraduate. Maia moved to the Detroit area after applying for graduate school at Wayne State University to study Economics and earned her PhD in 2006. Dr. Platt then joined the faculty at the University of Detroit Mercy in 2006. As a member of the Health Services Administration faculty, she served as program director from 2018-2020 and since 2020 she served as CAHME Accreditation Lead which culminated in an incredibly positive initial review and visit this April. She was the primary architect of the accelerated BS to MHSA program that launched this academic year. Dr. Platt’s expertise in healthcare management and economics has gained her a regional and national reputation and she is highly regarded among scholars in her field. She was a member of the editorial board for the Journal of Health Administration Education and served as a mentor for the International Heath Economics Association. Dr. Platt has a record of scholarship, most recently she co-edited a textbook on best practices for teaching health economics. In recognition of her accomplishments, Dr. Platt was recently awarded full-professor status. Maia met David and was married in August of 2001 at St. George Orthodox Church in Troy. Most importantly, Maia was a wife and dedicated mother and her love for family was always forefront. She leaves behind her husband David and children, 8-year-old twins Jackie and Nicole and 11-year-old Justin who will celebrate a birthday in June.Maia enjoyed playing tennis, teaching, and traveling. Maia was an amazing friend who touched people in many ways. She cared deeply about people in her life and was always the first person to offer help. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
Visitation to take place on Friday, June 17 from 3:00 – 8:00 PM, with the Funeral Service starting at 6:00 PM. Burial will occur on June 18 at Clinton Grove Cemetery beginning at 10:00 AM
