Dr. Byung H. Lim, psychiatrist, was an accomplished, vibrant man with many talents and interests. Dr. Lim came to the U.S. in 1968 after graduating from the College of Medicine at Seoul University in South Korea and serving as a medical officer in the Korean Army for three years. After his internship in Chicago and his psychiatric residency in Traverse City, Dr. Lim dedicated his career to serving the people of Michigan. He started as a staff psychiatrist in 1972 at the Traverse City State Hospital then moved his family to Ann Arbor in 1975 where he worked at the Ypsilanti Regional Psychiatric Hospital. In 1977, he was appointed Section Chief and then Division Director, and in 1983, was named Chief of the Admission Unit. Dr. Lim worked at the state hospital until it was closed in 1991, then worked as a staff psychiatrist for Genesee and Washtenaw counties. He was also an adjunct clinical instructor in the psychiatry department at the University of Michigan from 2002 to 2006. Dr. Lim was also very civically engaged, particularly in support of the Korean community in Ann Arbor. Among other activities, Dr. Lim was directly involved in the development of the Korean Society of Ann Arbor and the Korean School of Ann Arbor, holding leadership positions in both organizations. After retiring in 2006, he was able to focus on his numerous passions: travel, nature photography, bird watching, gardening, and spending time with his family. His life has been an inspiration for his children and grandchildren. He will always be remembered for his gentle manner, patience, strength, and most of all, his love and dedication to his family.
Dr. Lim is survived by his wife of 57 years Choon Hee Lim; his children Mee Young (Matt) Ashba, David (Rebecca) Lim, and Jeannette (Ali) Wicks-Lim; his grandchildren Evan, Jacob, and Aubrey Ashba, Michael and Matthew Lim, and Mason and Summit Wicks-Lim.
