Achamma Tommy
October 3, 1939 – May 10, 2020
On October 3, 1939, in Angamally, Kerala, E.P. Mathew and his wife, Saramma were blessed with beautiful twin girls. Achamma, the older of the two, was named after her paternal grandmother. She was part of a loving family with two older brothers and two older sisters, as well as two younger brothers and two younger sisters. She was the center of their love and affection, and in turn, loved each of them dearly.
A bright and vivacious student, she finished her schooling in Alwaye and then earned a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from St. Mary’s College in Trichur. On January 31, 1963, she married her handsome husband, Kooran Abraham Tommy and they began their life together in Calcutta. God blessed them with a son, Jebby, and a daughter, Joyce. She cherished her family, nurturing them with her loving care. In due course, her children were married, and she welcomed Mini and Sajan into her circle of love. She was overjoyed when her grandson Michael was born and thrilled at the arrival of triplets, Elaine, Alan, and Joshua. She doted on each of her children and grandchildren.
She came to the saving knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ as a young girl, and over the years was in fellowship at Brethren Christian Church Angamally (West), Bethesda Gospel Hall at Calcutta, Sharon Gospel Hall at Thane, Bethel Assembly at Santa Cruz, and New Hampshire Avenue Gospel Chapel in Maryland. For the last 36 years, she worshipped with the saints at Martin Road Gospel Chapel in Michigan. She loved her Savior and the Word of God, and enjoyed delving into the scriptures while solving the Suvisheshakan Bible quizzes. She depended on the promises of God throughout her life, especially during difficult times of sickness or loss, and she never wavered in her faith.
With a ready smile and kind words, she charmed everyone she met. She was generous and gentle, yet strong and resolute. Her sweet and loving nature was a living illustration of her faith. She had an adventurous spirit and enjoyed cruises and trips to various parts of the world. Most of all, she delighted in spending time with her immediate and extended family. She showed them her love by cooking delicious dishes which were relished by all. She was loved and adored by family and friends around the world.
On the morning of May 10, 2020, it pleased the Lord to call her home to be with Him in glory. She is now at rest from her earthly labors and enjoying the wondrous presence of our risen Lord. She was blessed to be a wife, mother, grandmother, sister, sister-in-law, aunt, and friend. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Kooran Tommy and her brother, George Mathew. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Jebby and Mini; daughter and son-in-law, Joyce and Sajan; grandchildren, Michael, Elaine, Alan, and Joshua; and siblings Samuel Mathew, Alice Paul, Marykutty Easaw, Grace Thomas, Paul Mathew, James Mathew and Mercy Samuel.
The family of Achamma Tommy is grateful for all your love and support during this time of grief. We ask for your continued prayers as we face the future without her loving presence.
